Speed Training Drills For Ice Hockey Players – How to Get Faster and Stay Faster

Speed training drills are often times not incorporated into hockey practices. There will always be skating drills, but speed is often something simply attributed to nature. The thinking goes that any player who isn’t naturally fast, probably won’t ever be. This is completely wrong. Like anything in sport and fitness, speed can be improved through proper training and practice. Here are some tips to help in that improvement.

Firstly, form is of great importance to speed, and a lot of players don’t skate at their maximum speed purely because of bad form. If form has been identified as a problem, it’s time to hit the power skating classes. No one is too old for power skating if their stride is in need of some tweaking. The simple corrections to minor imperfections in a player’s stride can have huge impacts.

Secondly, watch how the pros do it. In the NHL skills competition, the fastest skater competition tends to feature some of the same faces each year. One thing you’ll notice if you watch them is they all have a similar strategy. They’ll start off with very short, powerful strides to get them up to speed as fast as possible, but once they’ve reached speed, they stop taking the short, bursting strides, and transfer into longer, smoother ones. This is something many players ignore, instead opting to keep their feet moving as fast as possible, as if they were running on the ice. This is a mistake. Start your strides short, get up to speed, and then maintain the speed by smoothing and lengthening your stride.

Hockey dryland training for early teen players is incredibly important, yet so many kids don’t get any dry land training at all. At this age, natural talent won’t cut it anymore, and the kids who train the hardest are the ones who are going to make it farthest in the long run. For a young player to stand out from the crowd, they absolutely need to be training off-ice. Here are some great exercises kids can do to get that edge on the competition.

Shift Approximation Intervals:

Shift approximation intervals are one of the absolute best exercises that kids can do off-ice. The reason is, these intervals will improve their overall speed and quickness, and also condition them to be able to perform at a constant level throughout an entire game. To do these intervals, run or stationary-bike in alternating intervals of intense effort and low effort in intervals of 45 seconds intense followed by a minute and a half to two minutes of rest. This will simulate the natural intervals of effort and bench rest that players see in game.

Squat Jumps:

Squat jumps are a plyometrics exercise that are amazing at building power and quickness in the lower body, which is absolutely essential for players to be dominant on the ice. To perform squat jumps, simply stand in a normal squat position and lower into the squat. Explode from that position upwards and raise your arms over your head at the peak. Upon landing, immediately lower back into the squat position and repeat. The goal is to constantly be in motion. This exercise is amazingly effective at working the lower body.

How to get faster in hockey is one of the top questions every player wants the answer to. After all, on the ice, speed is king. Every single dominant player that has ever played the game has been a fast, powerful skater, and without speed, you can’t possibly reach your full potential on the ice. Here are some tips you can use to increase your skating speed and become more dominant on the ice.

First stride speed is king…

First stride speed, or first stride acceleration, is how quickly you go from stopped or coasting to full speed. Take a look at the top players in the NHL and you’ll see that they all take very little time to get up to their maximum speed. The key to this is to be able to get to top speed in as few strides as possible. You want to take only a few strong, choppy strides, and then once at top speed, transition to long, smooth strides to maintain that speed.

Form can make a big difference…

When you skate, your skating form can be the difference maker in how quickly you get up to speed, and how well you maintain that speed. If you skate with poor form, you’re not reaching anywhere near the speeds you could be. Period. Little, tiny changes in form can make all the difference in how fast you skate. Focus on fixing any little imperfections in your skating form and your speed will get a huge boost.

Hockey Leg Workout Program

Re-read the title of this article; what is the most important word you see? Is it power or stamina? Nope. The key word in the title is simple. Understand right now that a ‘simple’ dryland training workout is not the same thing as an ‘easy’ dryland training workout. This workout is tough! The marketing gurus get mad at me when I tell athletes “this is going to be tough!” They tell me to say this will be a ‘quick easy miracle cure for your hockey dryland training woes’. Well, if that is what you are looking for; the quick easy solution, keep on looking ’cause you won’t find it here! Hockey Leg Workout Program

This workout will be tough, but remember the goal is to make you a better hockey player, not just to make you tired. So the workout that I have designed for you today will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Here is what you will need for this hockey dryland workout:

· Running shoes or cleats that give you good grip on grass

· A water bottle

· A steep, but fairly short hill (preferably grassy) that you can run up in about 4-8 seconds

The Workout

Warning: This workout is designed for healthy, injury free, competitive hockey players who are already involved in hockey dryland training.

Warm-Up

Begin with a full dynamic warm-up making sure you target your quadriceps, hamstrings, groins, calves and hip flexors.
Complete two easy runs up the hill, walking back down
Side step up the hill (change direction half way up) as you final warm-up exercise. Hockey Leg Workout Program

Workout Run as fast as you can up the hill – drive with your glutes taking full strides and pump your arms. Walk down slowly between repetitions. Repeat 5 times.
Backpedal up the hill – stay low in your legs with your knees bent to approximately 90 degrees. Your quads should be screaming for mercy by the time you hit the top. Repeat 5 times
Skate bound up the hill by hopping from one foot to the other as you progress up the hill. Hop side to side at about a 30-45 degree angle as you progress up the hill. As you fatigue your skate hop will start to resemble a running bound as you project yourself up the hill more than side-to-side. Repeat 5 times.
Take a 2-3 minute break between each exercise taking time to have a drink of water and incorporate some of your basic core training as a part of your active recover between exercises.

Although this is not a pure power workout because of the fatigue levels, you will learn to command power from your body even when you are exhausted. Use your arms to help set the pace and try to keep a quick tempo using a full range of motion throughout the drills. Keep your chest up for all drills, do not fold forward at the hips and push yourself.

This is a nice workout to include 1-2 times per week in the off-season and depending on your schedule, your ice time and your climate perhaps once per week during the season. Hockey Leg Workout Program

Whether you’re a coach or parent, how much do you really know about football training techniques and helping your players or son train properly to reach the ultimate success they’re looking for? With all the football training aids and programs out there, it can be quite overwhelming and/or confusing.

If you’re not helping your players or son dramatically improve in the areas of conditioning, strength and speed, how in the world can you expect them to have success, especially against the best teams on the schedule?

It doesn’t matter if it’s Pop Warner or high school, you need to focus on football training like the pros…it’s all about teaching how to develop acceleration and deceleration, as well as change of direction speed. That’s what gets you more offensive yards and prevents giving them up on defense.

It’s time to educate yourself, whether it be through the best youth football training dvd out there, or a total football training program. These days, it’s not longer OK to neglect the best football training techniques available, allow a free-for-all in the weight room, or think “gassers” are sufficient to get football players into shape.

Even if you’re overwhelmed with how to provide the correct speed, strength, and conditioning players need, or you don’t honestly know enough about it, focusing on better schemes, scouting or film preparation will never overcome a team that doesn’t have the size, strength and speed of the top programs in your district.

If you’re a coach, it’s your responsibility to give your team all the correct football training techniques. If you’re a parent and frustrated by the lack of speed, strength and conditioning help your son is receiving by his coach, you must do more than having your son look at one youth football training dvd or use a couple of football training aids.

There are too many quality total football training packages available that are comprehensive and complete in the information provided to not take advantage. People like NFL head strength and conditioning coach Duane Carlisle are providing help to youth coaches, players and parents that results in understanding what football training like the pros really entails.

What needs to happen is that you take action. Get the right tools. Help your players or son. Their success and happiness depends on you taking a proactive approach to bettering their strength and conditioning.

How to get faster in hockey is a question every player should be asking themselves. Speed is king on the ice and it’s the difference between good players and great players. Speed can give you the edge in getting around defensemen and make sure you get to loose pucks first. Some people think speed is natural and can’t be trained, but they’re wrong. Here are three great tips you can use to get faster and stay faster.

Little changes in form can make big changes in speed.

Ice skating, especially high performance skating for hockey, is an area where form is absolutely crucial, and a player with imperfect form, or worse, poor form, has no chance at reaching their potential when it comes to skating speed. Slight variations can make huge differences. Have a coach video tape you skating and then sit down and analyze your form. You’ll likely be able to identify areas you could improve, and the difference could be huge.

More strides does not equal more speed.

One thing many skaters do is pump their feet constantly as they skate, almost like they’re running. This doesn’t make them faster though. No top skater takes a single stride more than they have to. More strides does not equal more speed. Instead, take a few hard quick strides to get up to speed quickly, and then shift your focus to long, smooth strides. You want to hit top speed in as few strides as possible, and then maintain that speed with as little energy as possible.

Hockey Dryland Training – 3 Top Dryland Exercises to Make You More Dominant on the Ice

Hockey dryland training is one of the very most important factors that go into becoming a great hockey player, but it’s also ignored by a huge number of players. Off-ice dryland training can be done in the gym or outdoors. It’s best done heavily in the off-season, but can be done all year around if worked in properly. Here are three amazing dryland exercises you can do as part of your training routine to get you great results:

Shift Intervals

Shift intervals are a fantastic exercise to do to increase your in game performance because they’ll built up your speed and also condition you to perform consistently throughout whole games. They can be done on a treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical, or track. Perform them by continuously running at maximum capacity for about 45 seconds and then at a slower pace for about a minute and a half, repeating the process over and over.

Football Field Line Drills

This is a lot like skating the lines on a hockey rink and will help you with your stops and stars, speed, and overall agility. Start at one end of a football field and sprint the lines (only use a small portion of the field, not the entire thing. Go from the 50 to 20, back to the 40, then to the 10, then back to the 30 and to the goal line. Alternate that routine however you like. The key is to be springing from point to point, and stopping and starting quickly on direction changes.

Ladder Runs

Ladder drills are interval sets that change in duration as you do them. Instead of running a consistent interval pattern like with the shift intervals, you’ll change the rest and work times. I.e. a common run might be 10 seconds hard, 20 seconds easy, 20 seconds hard, 30 seconds easy, 20 seconds hard, 20 seconds easy, 20 seconds hard, 10 seconds easy, 10 seconds hard. This will improve your stops and starts, overall speed and agility.
