Understanding The Game of Soccer

Outside of the United States, the game of soccer is regarded as the most popular sport in the world. Many of the top teams and top soccer players attract huge admiration from millions of fans and boast huge multi million dollar salaries.

The Rules of the Game: Soccer is very simple to understand. Each team can field eleven players at any one time and they can make substitutions at any point in a game. The number of changes is dependent on the league, but in the current era three substitutions is the accepted norm across the leagues.

A game of soccer will last for two separate periods, each lasting forty-five minutes. The time between the periods is called half-time and lasted for approximately ten minutes.

Each team defends one half of the pitch in order to prevent the opposing team from scoring a goal in the net at the end of the pitch. Soccer coaches have developed various methods to create ways to improve the offensive and defensive tactics of the game.

Generally modern teams will defend the goal using four defenders and a player who protects the goal, known as the goal keeper. Offensively, the coach selects four players in midfield and two strikers to create and score the goals.

With the exception of the goal keeper, the players can not handle the ball. Instead, good play is developed by passing the ball in various ways to attempt to breach the opponent’s defense. Goal scoring is low in the professional soccer game with most matches decided by just one or two goals.

There is a lot of terminology used during a game of soccer that is very specific. To the casual viewer this can appear confusing. The most important factor to consider is discipline. The game is mediated by one referee on the pitch and two further officials known as linesman on either side of the pitch.

If a player attempts to take the ball from an opponent but misses and instead makes contact with the player, the referee will regard this as a foul and stop the game and award a free kick to the fouled team. Dependent up on the severity of the foul, the referee can issue the player with either a yellow or a red card.

A yellow card indicates to the player that they risk being issued with a red card later in the game. The red card indicates that the player must leave the game immediately. In these circumstances they are not allowed to return for the remainder of the game.

On each side of the pitch the defense protects the goal. Directly in front of the goal is a marked rectangular area. If the referee deems that a foul has occurred in this area by a member of the defense, a penalty kick is awarded. When this occurs, a member of the offense is given the opportunity to score a goal against the opposition goalkeeper without the defense able to assist.

Finally, perhaps the most confusing law is the offside rule. At its simplest interpretation, an offensive player cannot be ahead of the defense as the play develops. This is regarded as attempting to gain an unfair advantage and if seen by any of the referees will result in a free kick for the defense.

This rule is responsible for many of the debates and controversies that surround the game of soccer. The referee’s interpretation ultimately can decide who wins a game. At present, despite calls to introduce video technology to assist the officials nothing has been forthcoming.

College Soccer: a Short History

Students try out in college sports recruiting for a spot in college soccer teams. Soccer is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world. It is played on a rectangular field of grass or turf, with a goal set up at the opposite ends. The object of the game is to bring the ball into the opposing goal. Generally, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to catch the ball, while the rest of the team usually make use their feet to kick the ball in play, or else use their torso or head to propel a ball in midair. The team that manages to score the most goals by the end of the allotted time wins. Depending on the format of the game, if the score is tied at the end of the game, a draw is acknowledged, or else the game proceeds into overtime and/or a penalty shootout.

In England during medieval times, players from towns and villages played against rival towns and villages. Apparently there were no known set of definitive rules, and kicking, punching, biting and such violent behavior were permitted.

The object of the game was to move the ball to an agreed spot which had been marked out before playing commenced. Hundreds of people took part in the games, and a match could last all day. So violent did these matches become that many attempts were made by the authorities to ban soccer. In fact, during King Edward III’s reign, laws were passed that threatened imprisonment to anyone caught playing soccer. King Edward III’s included this statement: “For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future.”

Soccer is now a regulated sport with countless fans across the world; and many among these are high school students. It is usually the case that only the indisputably best players will be approached with offers to play in college soccer teams without having to make any effort. Most soccer players will have to promote their skills and abilities themselves in the process of college sports recruiting.

Fortunately, the Internet has proved to be a useful venue for both athletes and coaches looking for promising players to play in their college soccer teams. College Soccer: Kicking Techniques and Scholarships

Soccer kicking techniques vary widely. From basic shooting and passing skills to advanced techniques (such as bending the ball around a wall, for instance), soccer players have a number of kicking styles to choose from and utilize.

The player’s instep, which is the part of the foot where the laces are, provides both power and control to a kick. One of the most common mistakes made by novice players is to use the toe. This not only painful, but makes for terribly inaccurate shots as well. The instep presents a flat surface to the ball, allowing more control. It can also be used to make the ball swerve and dip.

The non-kicking foot in turn provides support, and should be bent when a kick is made. When keeping the ball on the ground, a player’s head should be kept down, over the ball. The kick itself be long and smooth, and should be made slightly from the side whenever possible.

This basic soccer kicking technique is remarkably simple, and therefore is often overlooked. Real skill is found in making accurate kicks while under pressure in a tight game, and it is far more important than to being able to perform fancy tricks with the ball.

Safety Tips For Your Child Before and During a Football Game

Football has definitely captured the hearts of millions of Americans. Perhaps this is why it is the most popular sport of the nation. In recent years, there have been many equipment innovations making football gear safer for many players. Although this is true, football is still a sport where injuries can and do happen. Parents such as yourself can help reduce potential injuries by learning some of the simple facts about football gears and on-field plays. Whether you are planning to buy used gears or NFL football helmets for kids, here are a few guidelines every parent should reinforce with their child before they step out onto the field:

• It is important to ensure that the equipment your child is using is up to date and have passed all the proper equipment inspections. These gears should be inspected annually and routine maintenance done accordingly.

• One of vital football equipment probably is the football helmet. It should fit snugly on the head but is still comfortable enough for the player. Recent models are designed to be lighter and stronger.

• Appropriate fit for any sports gear should always be a priority. Therefore, it is vital you pick a shoulder pad that is not too big for your child. Do not choose bigger shoulder pads just for the sake of appearance.

• Companies manufacturing football equipment puts a great deal of time and effort in designing gears for maximum protection. Hence, if the equipment is modified, the protection is compromised. Never modify your child’s football gear by painting the helmet to your preferred color. The solvent used might weaken the shell of the helmet compromising its integrity.

• Functionality is very important in football. Other accessories that come with helmets and shoulder pads keep the gear acting as a whole system. Ensure that all of these are functioning properly for the equipment to provide utmost protection.

• Let your child wear all the necessary equipment such as mandatory gears that are meant to protect certain body parts that are more vulnerable to injury.

• Tell your child to keep the chinstrap snug and fully buckled as it is an integral part in keeping his helmet positioned. An unfastened chinstrap can result in a loss of a helmet which can increase the chance of head injury.

• Make sure your child wears a full mouth guard. Facts show a high percentage of concussions as a result of a mouth guard cut too short or no mouth guard at all.

• Remind your child if possible to never hit with the head. Even if you have purchased the best NFL football helmets for kids, this is not an assurance that these gears can completely protect your child from a high-impact hit.

Although you can never really protect your child during a football game, it is a bit comforting that he is equipped with the right gear and proper knowledge to handle possible injuries during the game. In following these tips, you will have less worry and will enjoy watching your child play the game that he loves.

The requirement for almost every league is shin guards. These come in a variety of styles and are essential to protect the shins players errant balls or a kick that is not designed to connect with them, but somehow did. A good shin guard protects the player from below the knee to the ankle and has a removable ankle plate protection. It should be made of a flexible plastic outer shell and a soft coating for comfort. Weight Training Ideas For Football Players

Football has become one of America’s favorite games because of the long passes, tough runs, and big hits. If you are a football player you already know how much it takes to be good at this sport but what do you do to get better?

If you are looking to get better at football hitting the weight room is a good idea. This article will give you some weight training for football exercises that will get you better at football.

Football is probably the most popular sport in America today because Americans enjoy big hits and long passes. What does a football player need to work on though? It is a hard thing to say because every single position needs to work on something different. Below are just a couple of the positions in football and some weight training for football exercises that each should do:

Quarterback

One thing that the quarterback does not necessarily have to be is big. If you are a quarterback you really do not have to go and hit the weight room and try to put on a ton of muscle but I would recommend you do.

Quarterbacks mainly have to worry about their arm strength, working on biceps, triceps, and shoulders mainly, and their quickness. A quick quarterback is able to scramble out of the pocket and get better reads without being hit.

Offensive/Defensive Line

Although offensive and defensive line are really two way different things they do require very similar things. Offensive and defensive linemen need to be big and strong to be able to hold their own against the opposition. The bigger and stronger the line the more they will be able to accomplish. Offensive linemen do not really have to be quick other then they need to be quick off the line. Defensive linemen have to be quick so that they are able to get to the quarterback, running back, etc. quickly.

So all linemen need to hit heavy on the weight room working mainly on their upper body strength and work some on their quickness.

Wide Receiver

Wide receivers need to be small and quick. A wide receiver has to be quick enough to get off the line and down the field as quickly as possible so that the quarterback can hit them before the linemen hit him. Jumping also helps wide receivers so that they are able to catch a more wide variety of passes.

If your a wide receiver you should work on building up your legs to be able to jump, work on quickness and speed drills to get fast, and do not worry to much about hitting up the weight room.

Those are just three of the many positions of football but you can see how almost every position requires something different out of the weight room.

Depending on the position you play you will have a different weight training for football exercise that you should do to improve your football game.

College Soccer Teams and Scholarships

College soccer, like soccer in general, is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world. For students eager to play college soccer and continue their education, the chance of playing in college soccer teams is an opportunity not to be missed.

Specific rules are set in order to regulate the play of the game. A penalty kick is rewarded when a contact foul or hand ball is made. The ball is placed on the penalty spot and all players must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is kicked. The goalkeeper should have both feet placed on the goal line until the ball is kicked. Afterward, if the ball rebounds off of the goal or the keeper and remains on the field, the ball is considered “live” and anyone can try to take possession of it.

For severe fouls, a referee will hold up one of two cards, depending on the gravity of the offense. The cards are about the same size as that of a playing card. One is yellow, while the other is red. When a card is held up in plain sight, the referee stops the game, calls the player over and writes the player’s name in his notebook, a process known as booking. A Yellow or Red Card merits a kick for the opposite team.

A yellow card indicates a formal warning for any of the following: unsportsmanlike behavior (includes hard fouls such as holding an opponent, faking an injury, etc); aggressive dissent in words or actions; repeated rule violations; delaying restarts of play, (in the case of defenders) failing to maintain the proper distance from the kicker on a corner kick, free kick or throw-in; entering or re-entering the field without the referee’s knowledge; and deliberately exiting the field without permission. Players who have already received 2 Yellow Cards are given a Red Card & ejected. However, in some leagues players leave after being given one yellow card. A player is given a Red Card for the following: foul play (includes any use of excessive force); violent conduct; deliberately touching the ball with by hand to prevent a goal; fouling an opponent to prevent an otherwise successful goal; as well as offensive, insulting or threatening language or gestures.

College Soccer: Player Substitutions

Students try out in college soccer recruiting for a spot in college soccer teams. Soccer is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world. It is played on a rectangular field of grass or turf, with a goal set up at the opposite ends. The object of the game is to bring the ball into the opposing goal.

For a soccer team that is on the losing end of a match, a striker fresh from the bench can be a great benefit in routing an opposed defense line composed of already exhausted players. For a team that is already dominating a game, a fresh midfielder or a defender can contribute in strengthening the defense against the opposite team’s attackers, who themselves may well be fresh substitutes. In this type of playing situation, it is usually imaginative attacking flair athletes who are replaced by tough-tackling defensive midfielders or defenders.

Obviously, injured players may also need to be substituted, since the team loses one more opportunity to influence things for each injured player. If the team hopes to sway the game in their favor, they must choose wisely which member should be substituted.  Sometimes, substitutions can also be used as a time-consuming tactic to hold to a goal lead in the last minutes of the game.

Students cannot succeed in college soccer recruiting if they don’t do what is necessary to get recruited. A student must have a detailed, professional athletic resume prepared.  And, he must make sure that this reaches the desks of representatives from college soccer teams.

The Internet has proved to be a useful venue for both athletes and coaches looking for promising players to participate in college soccer teams.
