The One Thing You Must Know to Make Money on Horse Racing Handicapping

horses racing
Horse Racing

Ask almost anyone at the races, OTB, or sportsbook and they can tell you how often the favorites win a horse race.  Almost everyone who goes to the races or bets on them knows that the favorite wins about one third of the time.  While that little pearl of information is valuable, it won’t make you one red cent.

Some people think that since the favorite wins about a third of the time, that any favorite going off at better than 2-1 odds is a good bet.  The reason they think that is that they believe, since the favorite will win one out of three races, that they will spend to back one of these 5-2 types and win at least in one out of three of those races, but that simply is not the case.

The odds of the favorite winning are directly proportionate to the odds of the favorite.  So the lower the odds on a favorite, the more likely it is to win.  Therefore, a horse at 2-5 is much more likely to win a race than a horse at 5-2.  But no matter how low the odds may be on the favorite, there is always the matter of the track’s takeout and they are therefore always a bad bet.

On the other hand, if you are thinking along these lines, you are close to realizing the one truth that all horse players must know in order to make a profit from their bets.  I am talking about the strike rate or win percentage of the type of horse you are betting on.  That is the whole key to being a successful horse player, and by successful I mean making a profit.

How do you know how often a type of horse wins?  First, let’s be sure we know what I mean by “type” of horse.  When you handicap you use different factors such as speed, class, connections, pace, trip notes, etc.  A type of horse is one who has certain values in each one of the factors.  For instance, a speed type horse may have the fastest times in its last two races.  That is a very simple type.

A more complicated type may be one who is in the top three for speed and also has the most class, as well as connections who win at least 25% of the time.  The way you arrive at these values is to keep notes about horses who win in the same types of races.  For instance, you may notice that early speed and class are the two most important factors for two year old races at your favorite track.  You also note that these types of horses win about 40% of all races.

Now, when you identify such a horse in a race you know that, based on its expected win probability, it will have to pay at least .50 per bet in order to make a 10% profit on your bets.  The reason for this is that a horse that wins 40% of the time will win two races out of 5.  At a base bet of per race, 5 races will cost you .  In order to recoup your plus profit (10% on your investment) you will need the horse to pay .50.

So the one thing you must know in order to make a profit, is how often the horse you are betting on will win in a sample of 10, 20, 30 or more races.  That isn’t something that is hidden from the public.  You can figure that out by paying attention and keeping records.  If you do that you can make a profit, and you will be among the few who put forth the effort to do it and therefore, one of the few who actually makes money betting on horses.

Horse Racing Handicapping Lessons to Understand Value and Make Money

Many people who handicap horse races are good at determining who the best horse is and putting together some kind of hierarchy so they understand which horses are the most likely contenders.  The problems start when they try to figure out what odds those horses should go off at and what are fair odds for each horse.  That is the one skill that separates professionals from amateurs and winners from losers.

Therefore, in order to be a successful, winning handicapper, you must learn how to determine fair value.  You will never make a profit betting on horses until you know when to bet on a horse and when to lay off it based on the odds.

On the other hand, if you can develop this one skill, you will be able to make money playing the horses.  There are a lot of people who are trying to do just that and as economic times get harder, there will be even more people trying to supplement their incomes from the races, meaning more money in the pools and more money to be made picking winners.

But before we get into the specifics of finding value, let’s be sure you understand what I am talking about, since I just brought up the subject of picking winners.  Many people can pick the most likely winner of the race, and therefore, many favorites win races.  This is very important.  Picking winners is not enough, you must pick good bets.  There are times when the horse you think is most likely to win the race will not be the best bet in the race.

The reason for that is that the horse that is most likely has been bet down below fair value.  That means another horse is probably going off at generous odds so that if it does win, you will make a profit on it.  Let’s say that the favorite in the race is really the best looking horse and deserves to be the favorite.  Let’s say that you think it has a 35% chance of winning.  But it is going off at 1-1, even money!  It is a lousy bet because it will only win about one in three races with a payoff so small, it won’t even cover your bets.

However, in the same race, another horse appears to have about a 20% chance of winning and it is going off at 6-1.  This horse is by far the better bet and actually a good bet.  Though this type of horse will win less often, if you keep backing these types you will make a profit.

So how do professionals arrive at these conclusions?  They use factors and percents to understand each horses chances.  A professional breaks a race down into handicapping factors and then watches many races until he or she knows how important each factor is and what percentage of horse win when they have a certain score according to that factor.

In other words, each horse has a mathematical score in each race.  That score is simply compared to the odds to arrive at fair value.  The upshot of all this is that you should be looking for good bets based on fair value to be a professional.  Leave the “picking winners game” to the recreational handicappers who pay for their entertainment by backing cheap winners at lousy prices.

It is still early in the 2010 season but we have had a full month of games. Looking back at the last 30 days I can see some trends have flourished. This is prime opportunity to win money betting baseball. Now a good baseball handicapper is always looking for a trend or streak along with the usual baseball statistics to make an accurate prediction. Here is one example on how to find a great angle for betting baseball totals. Follow this strategy and you will learn how to win money betting baseball.

I am always looking at betting totals and I see a few worth while trends in full swing. Let’s take a look at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now this team can score runs. Out of their first 24 games this season, 17 games have gone over the total number making their record on over plays 17-6-1. That is 74% of their games have gone over. This record leads all baseball teams right now.

Let’s break that down some more. The Diamondback while at home, 8 of 12 games have gone over the total or 67%. A little less of a percentage than the stat on all games played but still good enough for second place in all of baseball. On the road as a visitor the Diamondbacks lead baseball with 9-2-1 record against the total number. That is an amazing 82% of the time the runs goes over while playing on the road.

We can break it down even further. The Diamondbacks versus right handed starting pitcher are 12-6 or 67% over the total for all games played. Now it gets better, against a starting left handed pitcher the record is 5-0-1 or 100% over the total number. The Diamondback are definitely a team that is prone to go over the total regardless who and where they play. However, the chances are greatest of going over when playing on the road versus a starting left handed pitcher. This based on all their games played up to May 2, 2010. We are on our way to win money baseball betting.

The Diamondback just finished a series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field and now are heading to Houston to play the Astros. Looking at the Astros starting pitchers, I can see Wandy Rodriguez is a left handed pitcher. Rodriguez is currently 1-4 over the total number. You see that 1-4 mark and think well Rodriguez pitches low scoring games. Not necessarily true, in his first two starts his team the Astros scored zero runs. Out of all five of his starts the Astros only scored 9 runs all while they allowed 22 runs in those 5 starts. Astros just are not hitting the ball right now and the Diamondbacks are hitting very well.

The Astros while playing at home are 6-8-1 against the total or 43%. The average total runs scored in Astros home games is 8.5 and the average runs score in Diamondbacks road games is 12.8. Needless to say I am anticipating the line posted on the total this week when Wandy Rodriquez gets the start. Minute Maid Park in Houston typical is a pitchers ballpark and the total scores are on the low side. So, I am only interested in betting the total over in this series when Rodriguez, a left handed pitcher gets the start. According the Astros website, Rodriquez is the probable starting pitcher, for Thursdays May 6th match up with the Diamondbacks. Trends like this are a sure way to win money, that is my baseball betting tip.

Fantasy Football For Money – Knowing How To Place Your Bets

Merida’s Football Stadium

Recently constructed for the "Copa America", a championship in witch all the South American countries play football (or soccer).

EDIT: Some color fixtures and processing.

Playing fantasy football is an enjoyable experience as it is somewhat financially rewarding. The number of participants playing fantasy football for money is a quite large, and you meet interesting folks along the way.

Playing fantasy football for money is not just a way to make money, it can also be a way for you to enjoy the game you love: America’s professional National Football League. If you are a big fan of the game, not only you are a spectator of the NFL games, you can be part of the sport by, well, betting on it.

Another reason why there are many fans of fantasy football for money is that it involves using your strategy skills and knowledge in the National Football League games that earn you money. So, you really aren’t just relying on the ever fickle Lady Luck, but more into facts, statistics and maybe a bit of luck to win.

Before you start playing fantasy football for money, here are a few tips on how to the game and how to place your bets:

First, there are two types of basic draft leagues that you can chose from — the total points and the head to head.

The head to head draft league means that a team will match against a competing team on a weekly basis. The team who receives the most number of points will be known as the winner. In the finale of the American football game, the team with the best score, meaning number of win versus loss records, will meet in the ending championship in this fantasy world.

You can choose to join an ‘auction’ league in which there is a predetermined amount of fantasy football money so that participants can build their roster. An owner is allowed to bid on any NFL player that he prefers and even an individual football player can turn out in various teams in this fantasy football world. The thing though, is that a player might overdo investing in one fantasy football player and he might end up losing enough cash to fill out the other football player positions in his fantasy draft. So, auctioning is not the best deal to get into if you have a limited bank fund.

There is also what is known as ‘leagues of dynasty.’ This type of fantasy football for money betting is for hardcore fantasy NFL owners. It is truly like owning a real NFL team and the commitment to placing a wager takes season after season. The fun thing about betting on the dynasty league is the excitement of choosing rookies of the NFL. Fantasy football owners must do research and find rookies that are a good investment to their teams.

With the advent of the Internet hundreds of popular small niche business opportunities continue to emerge.Collecting items and then reselling them at a later date is a clever investment strategy and you don’t need to be rich to start.

The great thing about the Internet is the huge number of people that will see items that are offered for sale.In particular where items have a following with a particular group of collectors or even fans the opportunities for profit are everywhere.

Before dismissing an item as being ‘not a real antique’,think about what collectors are happy to pay good money for.If an item is more then a few decades old or has a link to a famous event or person it qualifies and will appreciate in value. With items like baseball gloves although you would think they are all fairly similar, the styles and look of gloves over time have changed greatly.

Like many online trading niches one of the best places to learn about trading baseball gloves is on Ebay. The great thing about Ebay is that you can paper trade by noting what items sell for,and which baseball gloves have the strongest following. With an item like Antique baseball gloves you will notice that gloves can be extremely plain looking or very colorful with bold white stitching.

A Basic Definition

The baseball glove is a glove made of leather that baseball players on a team defending use to catch and stop balls hit by the opposition team.Baseball gloves are made from the hide of dead animals. When you Google the term baseball glove you will see the name Doug Alison appear regularly. The history books show that Doug was the first man to ever wear a baseball glove and that was way back in 1871.Doug Alison was said to of had a hand injury at the time the glove was made up for him to wear.

Although the trend of wearing a baseball glove took a while to catch on,by the turn of the century most ball players were wearing gloves. The baseball gloves in those times were much more primative and hard to catch a ball with. The concept then was to stop a baseball in the field or knock it down to the ground to stop home runs.As the gloves developed more to mould around players hands the ability to catch obviously became more of a consideration.

These days gloves are very sophisticated and made for a range of different purposes. The Catcher’s gloves which have additional padding whilst the  pitcher’s gloves have extra webbing for grip.Even the infielders, outfilelders have differences ti improve performance.

Opportunity

Antique baseball gloves can sell for hundreds and in some cases even thousands of dollars. The great thing is that by tracking what people online are willing to pay for different series and sets of gloves, you can enter the market with literally just a few hundred dollars and begin to trade.

If you wish to see the range of different antique or speciality items that people are dealing in online,my tip is to take a look at ebay pulse and popular ebay.com.Many people without specialised collecting knowledge are turning a profit on ebay.

Football: Jets-v-Eagles, Sep 2009 – 44
Football

Note: for some reason, this photo was published as an illustration on a Sep 2009 Mahalo blog titled "College football results," at www-dot-mahalo-dot-com-slash-college-football-results. It was also published in an Apr 20, 2010 blog titled "Jets – Theme Development 97." And it was published in an Aug 29, 2010 blog titled "2010 Washington College Football Predictions." It was also published in an Oct 15, 2010 tTennis Center blog, with the same title and notes as what I had written here on this Flickr page.

********************

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that, until last night, I had never been to a professional football game in my life. Baseball, basketball, and tennis: yes, of course. High-school and college football games: sure, though that was a long time ago. Indeed, the last college football game I watched (in person) was in the mid-60s, when I was invited to the annual Harvard-Yale game by a Radcliffe student I had begun dating — a development to which my MIT college roommate reacted, in shock, by howling, "Radcliffe? You’re dating a Cliffie? She must be a pig!" After which he pulled out his flute, every time he thought she might be present when he returned to our off-campus apartment, and played "Old McDonald Had a Farm" until he collapsed in gales of laughter on the stairwell. Highly inaccurate, I hasten to note, and totally unfair. But I digress…

Anyway, a freelance writer, Mitch Ligon (whose photo you can see here in one of my Flickr sets), invited me to accompany him last night to the New York Jets – Philadelphia Eagles game out in the New Jersey Meadowlands — another first-time experience. I was given a photographer’s press pass, which gave me access to the locker rooms, press box, various other "inner sanctum" locations … and, most important, the football field itself. I was given a red jersey to wear, told to stay outside the yellow dashed lines that ring the field, and turned loose for the evening. I felt somewhat inadequate, because I knew that the "real" professional photographers would be equipped with high-cameras and monstrous telephoto lenses beyond anything I had ever touched, or could possibly afford; and even though my Nikon D300 and 70-300mm zoom lens is fairly respectable in amateur circles, I had no idea if I would be able to take any decent photos at all…

The other problem is that I know little or nothing about the nuances of football, beyond the obvious fact that the quarterback either passes the ball, or hands off to someone who attempts to run the ball downfield. Punts and field-goal kicks are also a familiar concept, but if you don’t have a good anticipatory sense of who is about to do what to whom, it’s easy to miss the "moment" when the perfect shot might be available. Also, I didn’t really know anything about the players, aside from the respective star quarterbacks: Philadelphia’s controversial Michael Vick, and New York’s newly-named starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez. I had looked at the team rosters on the Internet before the game, so at least I knew their jersey numbers (#6 for Sanchez, and #7 for Vick, as you’ll see in the photos) — but the "action" was often so far away (at the other end of the field) that I couldn’t tell whether the starting quarterback, or one of the substitutes, was making the plays.

Nevertheless, by the beginning of the second quarter I was feeling a little more comfortable — if only because I found it easy to follow along behind the other professional photographers as they marched (or ran) from one end of the field to the other, in order to get their equipment set up for what they expected would be the next great shot. By the end of the game, I had taken 1,100+ photos, including several of Michael Vick in a post-game locker-room interview; and from the sound of the clickety-click-clack of my fellow photographers, I could tell that many of them had taken several thousand. I’ll spare you the technical details of my feeble attempts to get some decent shots; I had picked up some good tips from the sports-photography chapter of Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography, and I did my best within the limitations of my equipment and my lack of familiarity with the situation.

What impressed me most about the whole experience was the scale of modern professional football — the scale of everything. It’s one thing to read that there are 80,000 people in a football stadium; it’s another thing to actually be there and hear the simultaneous roar of those 80,000 people as a quarterback is sacked or a long pass is completed. It’s one thing to read that a professional football player is 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 350 pounds; it’s another thing to stand next to several dozen such giants. Heck, I thought there were only 20 or 30 such giants on each team; I had no idea that there were 64 of them (a number which will be pared down as the pre-season comes to an end), or that there might be 20-30 different coaches. And then there are the hundreds of "staff members" scurrying around all over the place, carrying out their various duties and assignments; and there are the security guards and State Police, who spent most of the time scanning the stadium crowd rather than watching the players, presumably watching for scuffles or fights or … well, who knows what. There are cheerleaders too, in this case bearing the official name of New York Jets Flight Crew; I had expected half a dozen, but there were two dozen perky, long-haired beauties, with permanently frozen smiles, who who danced and pranced before the crowd at every conceivable opportunity.

All of this has resulted in the photos you’ll see in this album. I had to delete roughly a hundred of my original images, because they were out of focus, or because a referee decided to walk in front of my camera at the wrong moment; and another 900 were "okay," but not terribly exciting. I’m sure that none of them are as crisp, sharp, and well-composed as those taken by the Sports Illustrated photographer and the other professionals on the field; but I did end up with 72 "keepers" that I hope you’ll enjoy…

… and, yes, I probably will attend another football game or two in the years ahead. Whether I’m lucky enough to get down on the field again is anyone’s guess….

You are already very well aware that you are a huge football sports fan. However, what you really want to be is a fantastic fantasy football player. You want to be renowned, you want to win over friends and be on the top tier of your fantasy football leagues. Most all, you want to make money because as you know, fantasy football for money is a very lucrative business.

You do know that in order to win fantasy football and play fantasy football for money you first have to know the basics.
Play fantasy football for money and be prepared to be meticulous in knowing statistical data, trends analysis, knowing the National Football League (NFL) players’ strengths and weakness.
Aside from all these methodical and analytical parts of being a fantasy owner and playing fantasy football for money, you also have to know the rules of the game.

Several fantasy football games have leagues that are created to for money. These football league operations adapt a certain standard in fantasy football rules. Each of these rules have various levels of wagering and betting, each with different reward opportunities as well as risks.

The general rule in game betting is the more cash you invest, the bigger chances you have on winning. Some of these football money leagues ask for entrance fees and other monthly dues all of which will go to a money pot.

This is the same principle used for enterprises like Fantasy Factor. In fact, it is the same set-up as say, getting your friends to pool in cash and you watching a football match with the winners splitting the pot.

These fantasy football sites are there to play fantasy football for money. And since most of them are online, they have a bigger network to tap and a larger money pool to collect.

Of course, as with any site in the wide world of the Internet, you have to be careful and do your research. You would want to gamble your money in a way that you are expecting to win, rather than giving it away to fraudulent sites.

Before putting your money on your favorite fantasy team, you do research right? As a fantasy team owner, you are diligent enough to know the statistics of your players and how to draft them in your team. You should do the same when choosing money leagues, although, it is a fun venture when playing against a lot of players and wagering money on a bigger money pot.
So, good luck with playing fantasy football for money!

A Winning Horse Racing System – How To Make Money Online Now

If you’ve looked into betting forums, read reviews, read books, used software, bots, tipster’s services, etc, you will know by now that there is system for all sorts of markets such as Betfair games, horse racing, football, baccarat, tennis and more… And you know that for every single market on Betfair there are literally tons of systems created by people ready to take your money for practically nothing in return…

Does this sound familiar?

They generally leave you with hours of hair-pulling frustration and an even emptier bank account! And that’s if you are lucky. Sometimes you are also left with massive credit card bills to pay, because you have tried to give this or that system “one final shot”…

All we punters want is one thing – a simple and easy step-by-step system producing long lasting profits!! It’s not much to ask is it?

We want FIVE simple things from a winning horse racing system… we want a system that:

Does not require any previous experience or special skills.
Doesn’t put our full bank at risk.
Does not require hours in front of the computer.
Does not require much money to get started.
Most Important: Makes a lot of money for years to come!

Who can blame anyone wanting these things? People like you and me DON’T want to risk our hard earned cash. We just want to have the freedom to make money anytime we wish and never want to work a badly paid 9-5 job, another day of our lives.

Probably like yourself, I’ve tried out winning horse racing system and software that promise to give you everything you need to make long lasting profits on Betfair. I’ve joined every so called “professional gambler” tipster service out there. I’ve even given a couple of shots to those slick-looking betting bots that supposedly will take care of everything for you (some costing me over £200.00 per month!).

No body really does this now… but I was bitten by the horse racing bug when I was young, when my father took me to the betting shop with him (without my mother’s knowledge of course). He would let me pick a horse and I of course picked a horse that I liked the name of. My father on the other hand would study and study the form, then chew the fat with his mates and after several minutes of banter and form study… he would pick a horse.

Much to my father’s annoyance, occasionally my horse would win and his would finish a poor last or pull-up. Usually my horse was at long odds so I won more than him too. So at a very young age I realised that no matter how well you know the horse or the form it doesn’t mean it will win.

So I took another approach and as a young man I always found mathematics fairly easy and enjoyed stats and analysis so I thought there must be a system to horse racing and stacking the odds in your favour. All sport has averages and regular stats that occur. So can we stack the odds in horse racing in our favour and if so who knows how to do it?
