There is no sport in American history that is more exciting than baseball. This is illustrated by the millions of people who huddle around television sets when something like the World Series competition is being played. Fans will don special colored costumes, paint their faces, hold up signs and, in general, display their enthusiasm for the game. The winners are welcomed back to their hometown with parades and celebration parties.

Although there are no official records, it is believed that the game originated before 1861 with an English game called ’rounders’ which was played on sand lots. This game is still popular in the UK and Ireland schools and consists of hitting a ball with a bat and running around four bases. The game is mentioned, and called ‘baseball’, in a book written in 1745.

Other names for baseball were ‘townball’ or ‘base’, finally settling on the name baseball. It was not until 1845 that a man named Alexander Cartwright composed a set of playing rules and introduced the idea of scoring and record-keeping. It was in 1846 that the first recorded contest took place and in 1871 that the first professional league was established.

Although many different American cities established a professional team, the game did not become a popular sport until the 1920′s when Babe Ruth became a national hero with his well publicized home runs. He was playing for the New York Yankees at the time and led them to victory and a number of World Series titles.

The game also contributed to the acceptance of African-Americans as players in popular sports. This occurred in 1947 when Jackie Robinson was brought into the major leagues. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and became well known for his athletic ability. Prior to his acceptance into the league all African-Americans were restricted to playing in a Negro League.

It was in the 1950s that the Western United States started wooing teams from the East. At this time expansion teams were formed with players available from other teams. Since the beginning of major league baseball there has been a National League and an American League.

Previous to its elimination in 2008 the sport had been included in the Olympic Games. The United States won the gold in this event in 2000. This game has spread around the world and, in 2006 an American team took part in the first annual World Baseball Classic, held in the United States. Baseball history in America has come a long way from its humble beginning as a ’rounders’ game on a sand lot.

Football has been around for centuries and centuries. The notion of playing with a ball using feet has been thought of all over the world – from ancient Greeks to Chinese dynasties and from Eskimos in Greenland to Maoris in New Zealand. Modern football – with the codes and rules that we are all familiar with, was conceived in 1800s in Europe.

Back then in England and the rest of Europe, football boots were worn to protect feet while playing, and were usually heavy leather work boots, which were fitted with studs or cleats to improve grip and stability. These were ankle length and were mostly used as protection. Soon after, players of the same team would begin to wear the same types of football boots – in an effort to look and feel loyal. This led to the mass production of football boots, and the emergence of many footwear companies, some of which are still around now.

Following the Second World War, the European footwear specialists and football players were astonished to find out that South American players were highly skilled and moved extremely fast on the field. This was due to the fact that their football boots were much lighter and flexible. Intrigued by this, companies began to produce new football boots which were much lightweight and flexible to wear.

Perhaps the most famous football boot competition is between Adidas and Puma – owned by rival brothers who once worked together. Driven by their fierce competition, the two brothers kept on producing new football boots to continuously outdo each other. Puma claimed to have invented interchangeable screws made of plastic and rubber on football boots, something that Adidas also claims. Football boots were now being made of a mixture of synthetic components and leather, making the boots much lighter.

With technological advancements, there has been a massive change in the pattern of boots. This helped make boots that were more comfortable to wear. Football was now a household name because of star players like Pele, and many people wanted to buy football boots just like his. This started off sponsorship – which triggered changes in style, model and colour of boots to suit different players.

In the 1990s, the Predator football boot was formulated, which helped increase traction among boot and ball and boot and ground. This meant that boots could be used on better surfaces, ultimately improving performance. Traditional studs were replaced with a bladed design giving additional stability. Nowadays, there are hundreds of types of football boots out there, created for protection, comfort, stability, traction, performance and of course attraction!

History of Horse Racing in the US

Happy Valley Race Track HK
Horse Racing

Happy Valley Horse Racing Track (快活谷馬場 or 跑馬地馬場) is one of the two racecourses for horse racing in Hong Kong. It is located in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island, surrounded by Wong Nai Chung Road and Morrison Hill Road.

It was first built in 1845 to provide horse racing for the British people in Hong Kong. Before it was built, the area was a swampland, but also the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on Hong Kong Island. To make way for the racecourse, Hong Kong Government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area. The first race ran in December 1846. Over the years, horse racing became more and more popular among the Chinese residents.

On 26 February 1918, there was a tragic fire and at least 590 people died. It is the fire with the highest casualties in Hong Kong history.

The track was rebuilt in 1995, and became a world-class horse racing facility. Several football, hockey and rugby fields are encircled by the horseracing track.
*Wikipedia

Horse racing in the United States began in 1665, which took place on Long Island in the state of New York. After the introduction of horse racing, there were 314 tracks established by 1890. Soon after, in the year, 1894, the American Jockey Club came to be.

However, in the early part of the 20th century, gambling became illegal and bookmaking (taking bets, winning payouts, and calculating odds) became outlawed. This was almost the end to horse racing. In 1908, the introduction of mutual betting brought back the racing industry. Mutual betting is where all bets are placed in a pool and pay-offs shared among all winning bets. Horse racing thrived after introducing this type of betting, until WWII, when people could not afford luxuries.

The sport did not become popular again in the United States until horses began winning the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown consists of three races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. Among these three races, the most common form of racing, using the Thoroughbred, is flat racing. The track is usually oval and the competition consists of speed and endurance. In flat racing, there are two types of challenges, the condition race, and the handicap. In the condition races, the amount of weight is determined according to the sex and age of the horses and the quality of the runners. During a handicap race, each horse carries a different amount of weight, according to the male or female’s ability. Besides the extra weight, the horse is influenced by the inside railing, the surface of the track, its gender, and its trainer.

Keeping with flat racing, thoroughbreds, which consist of quarter horses and standard bred horses, run on surfaces like dirt, turf, or synthetic track or the pathway has a combination of all three surfaces. The horses would run flat out from start to finish on a straight track. An American thoroughbred also races a variety of distances, most 5-12 furlongs, or 0.63 to 1.5 miles.

However, when racetracks came about, it was too expensive to build a longer track; the quarter horse only ran a quarter of a mile, hence its name. The quarter mile became standard for these horses from then on, with the exception of the 870-yard distance contest, Nevertheless, the introduction of horse racing started in the United States, but takes place all over the world and each country uses their own rules when it comes to horse racing. Betting on horses is one of America’s favorite pastimes.

The ancient world of the Greeks began todays horse racing sport. Then, the Romans became obsessed with this horse racing sport, and like many other events in the history toke it to the next level. To help horse racing gain natural popularity the Greeks back in history incorporated this great game in the Olympics.

The importation of Arabian stallions into the United Kingdom during and after the Crusades began the origin of the game of horse racing in England. The combination of Middle Eastern stock and the European breeding led to the emergence of a swift runner with a steady build of horses.

The nobles and royal families in the course of Europe’s horse racing history where this sport was dedicated primarily to them. The commoners served as only spectators at this game.

As history states, Charles II and Queen Anne was so obsessed with horse racing that they had private and public horse racing competitions held through their own initiatives.

The development of various horse racing arenas throughout the land was much later in Europe. Although, professional horse racing started during the 16th century with the establishment of the great classics.

Europe had established the first governing body for horse racing and accomplished various things concerning horse racing before America has got its American Jockey Club.

The movement initiated by the elite of horse racing established the Jockey Club of England, and became the overseer of racetracks, races, standards for horse breeds, and event rules and regulations. During the 1750s they formalized the sport as we know of horse racing today. The early determination of breeding lines of the horses was the result by the Jockey Club. An official of the Jockey Club, James Weather was the first to distinguish the founding sires of the stallions, Thoroughbreds is what we call them today.

Throughout the development of horse racing, various types were formed, and are referred to as the classics. Some of most popular classics are St. Leger that was founded during 1776, the Oaks which was founded three years later, the Derby was produced the following year, 2,000 Guineas in 1809 and 1000 Guineas that was created five years later.

With the formation of the Jockey Club all these and other events were created through the Jockey Club.

St. Leger, a former Irish soldier Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger founded the St. Leger, and on September 24, 1776, the very first event under this category was held. Among the English Classics it had the longest distance but was canceled during the Civil War.

The Derby, during 1779 Edward Smith Stanley who was the Earl of Derby and devised this horse racing event who intended to race only among his friends over 1 ½ miles. The race has become successful that the following year saw the second race of its kind, and was named after his estate, Oaks.

These are only two of the most famous English Classics. Central to all these is that despite the presence of horse racing among other cultures, Europe is still credited for being the proponent for the 1st formal exhibition of horse racing.

Baseball is an international sport. It is played between two teams of nine players having nine innings. However it is mostly played in US and Canada. Baseball is similar to other bat and ball sports like cricket. One team is on the field with one player designated pitcher while the remainder fields. The other team rotates a player to bat. It has four bases and the hitter needs to negotiate until a home run is hit.

As the US dominates the game of Baseball, it is not an invention of North America. Its origin goes back to the medieval games from where cricket also developed. Bat and ball games of medieval times is most likely the father of modern baseball. Similar variants were played in the 14th century may have originated collectively earlier in history.

Bat and ball games played in England during the medieval times were dog and cat, rounders, Stoolball and perhaps cricket. Many historians suggest that stoolball was adopted by men in medieval villages which became an ancestor of cricket since by the 1500s. The game of Rounders which is played in Ireland today was also invented by England. It is very much similar to Stoolball and modern baseball.

A game called Town Ball played in US appeared to be brought by Irish and English immigrants. It was similar to Rounders. Town Ball was played in the 1740s and it was known as base, ball or round ball in some parts of the US. The name base ball was long considered to be coined in the US.

The early reference to baseball comes from 1791. The first recorded rules of Baseball came from 1845 when Alexander Cartwright, a New York firefighter.

Passion for baseball at club level and spectators was the cause of formation of several new clubs during the coming years. In 1858, 25 clubs came together and created the National Association of Base Ball Players. The NABPP and its successor the National Association were not very successful in encouraging growth in teams. This led to the formation of National League which continues till today.

The National League originally consisted of 12 teams but declining ticket sales in 1900 forced the league to downsize to 8 teams. This decision was exploited by the minor Western League and they expanded to other cities dropped by National League. The Western League later renamed itself to American League.

There is not too much difference between the two leagues as they both essentially operate the same rules with the exception of designated hitter rule adopted by American League in 1973.

From the birth of baseball, some great players inspired fans and players becoming celebrities from their humble beginnings. The integration of baseball started in 1945. Most of the club owners and major league executives were not in good principles regarding black players chance in the majors. A movement began in the late 1960s to have these players recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame.

There have been successful changes to the structure of major league baseball. Club finances have been credited with several minor clubs in the MLB winning the World Series in recent years including the Chicago White Sox (2005) and) and Florida Marlins (2003).

A baseball glove or mitt is a large leather glove that baseball players on the defending team are allowed to wear to assist them in catching and fielding balls hit by a batter, or thrown by a teammate.

Early baseball was a game played without gloves. During the slow transition to gloves, a player who continued to play without one was called a barehanded catcher. This did not refer to the position of Catcher, but rather to the practice of catching with bare hands. The earliest glove was not webbed and not particularly well suited for catching, but was used more to bat a ball to the ground so that it could be picked up. No doubt this lack of functionality contributed to the early resistance to the glove.

One of the first players believed to use a baseball glove was Doug Allison, a catcher for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, in 1870, due to an injured left hand.[1] The first documented story of glove use concerns Charles Waitt, a St. Louis outfielder/first baseman who in 1875 donned a pair of flesh-colored gloves. While glove usage was not accepted by all players at first, being considered “sissy” by many, it slowly caught on as more and more players began using different forms of gloves. “We used no mattress on our hands, No cage upon our face; We stood right up and caught the ball, With courage and with grace.”[2] That was the typical reaction from the “old-time” players when the gloves were first introduced.

Many early baseball gloves were simple leather gloves with the fingertips cut off, supposedly to allow for the same control of a bare hand, but with extra padding. The adoption of the baseball glove by baseball star Albert Spalding when he began playing first base influenced more infielders to begin using gloves. By the mid 1890s, it was the norm for players to wear gloves in the field.

It was an ironic fate for Spalding, as he once was skeptical to don the new glove in baseball, but then rose to the occasion and did it. He afterwards created the sporting goods empire known as Spalding Since their beginnings, baseball gloves have grown. While catching in baseball had always been two handed, eventually, gloves grew to a size that made it easier to catch the ball in the webbing of the glove, and use the off-hand to keep it from falling out.

A glove is typically worn on the non-dominant hand, leaving the dominant hand for throwing the ball; for example, a right-handed player would wear a glove on the left hand. By convention, the type of glove that fits on the left hand is called a “right-handed” or “RH” glove. The shape and size of the baseball gloves is governed by official baseball rules; Section 1.00, Objectives of the Game, defines limits of catcher’s, first baseman’s and fielder’s glove in parts 1.12, 1.13 and 1.14.

Wake Forest baseball coach Tom Walter donated a kidney to freshman outfielder Kevin Jordan, who suffers from a disease that can lead to kidney failure. Both men met with the media in an Atlanta hospital while recovering Wednesday. (Feb. 9)

A Short History of Horse Racing Betting

National Hunt Racing Horse
Horse Racing

Any type of risky situation where a decision is to be made involves gambling.  The solution to this dilemma is to study the involved variables thoroughly in order to make a smart calculated decision.  The outcome of a particular situation, either good, bad, or has no effect at all, would then depend on the choices made.  This dictum is remarkably applicable to simple everyday life choices as well as gambling with money.  Both require careful consideration of known facts and prediction of possible results, then making the appropriate decision in order to obtain a certain goal.

Gambling has been inextricably associated with horse racing events even during the earliest eras.  In ancient Greece and Rome, hordes of spectators from all around the land would gather in massive hippodromes in order to watch the exciting and dangerous chariot races and to place their bets on their favorite champions.  In the medieval period, horses of the highest quality were kept and raised by aristocrats, then pitted against each other in a game of speed and stamina where bets were made on winning horses.  The races, as well as the betting involved, were later exposed to the public.  And thus the modern day version of horse racing and horse racing betting was commenced.

This ancient game has since garnered worldwide fame and appeal and is currently a multi-billion dollar industry.  The allure of betting in horse races probably comes from the fact that a person does not have to own a horse in order to profit from the game.  All it takes to gain enough revenue from horse racing is a thorough knowledge of the variables of the game.  Exotic sounding equine names and brightly colored jockey uniforms do little to influence the outcome of a race.  On the other hand, factors such as an excellent trainer, a highly skilled jockey, good weather condition, a horse’s admirable history in a particular course and distance, and an ideal track surface can certainly win a race.

In the past, a horse racing fan who wanted to place a wager would have to be physically present at the tracks.  A list of races and the particular horses included in it are displayed in a board.  The bettor would choose which among them would likely win, place the appropriate bet, and then wait for the results.  Going to the tracks spend much time and also require a lot of patience.  Lines on betting windows are commonly long and sometimes races would run for a whole day before the final results are known.  This could be tedious to watch except for the most devoted of fans.

Nowadays, horse racing betting can be done wherever and whenever as a result of the internet and the introduction of online betting.  Various websites dedicated to horse racing and betting can be found online.  These provide easy access to the different horse racing markets available and thus increased the interest and awareness of the public on horse racing.  Instead of waiting in long lines and spending a whole day at the tracks, bettors could sit in the comfort of their own homes and earn easy profits.

The History of Football Boots

Football
by ghedo

Football, or at least a version of it – a ball game involving the use of feet has been played from back in the day. Literature provides evidence that the ancient Greeks and Romans used to play a game that resembled rugby football. Similarly, evidence of football being played by ancient Chinese, Japanese and Koreans has been documented. There are a number of references of ancient ball games being played by indigenous peoples in many different parts of the world – the Eskimos in Greenland, Native Americans in America, Aborigines in Australia and Maoris in New Zealand. Truly, football is a universal game!

However, the main sources of modern football, that is, the football code that we know of now, appear to lie in Western Europe, especially England. One early protagonist included one of the most famous figures of British history, King Henry VIII (1509-1547). In fact, the earliest recorded football boots belonged to him, and were made by his personal shoemaker Cornelius Johnson in 1525, at a cost of 4 shillings, the equivalent of £100 in today’s money. These boots were known to have been made of strong leather, ankle high and were heavier than football boots that we see today. Back then, football boots were worn to protect feet.

Fast forward 300 years to the 1800s. Players would wear their hard leather work boots as their football boots, which would also have metal studs or tacks hammered into them to increase grip and stability. In the late 1800s, laws became integrated into the game, and the football boots shifted to a slipper style shoe. Players of the same team started to wear the same boots. Leather studs (cleats) were also incorporated. These boots were 500g in weight, and made up of thick hard leather.

By early 1900s, entrepreneurs capitalised on the football boot craze, and started producing boots. In 1925, the first football boots with replaceable studs were produced. From the early 1900s to the end of the Second World War, there was not much emphasis on football boots, and not many changes occurred.  After the Second World War, as air travel became cheaper, the Europeans were intrigued by South American players who wore much lighter and flexible boots, and were fantastic players as a result. Football boot production then shifted to producing a lighter football boot, which helped kicking and controlling.

From then on, football boot development hit the roof. From interchangeable screws made of plastic and rubber, and shoes being produced of a mixture of synthetic materials and leather – new designs and features were constantly being thought up. With advances in technology, shoes were becoming lighter, and more flexible. Nowadays, the market for football boots is phenomenal. Many massive companies and brands are producing and selling high quality football boots that help improve performance, speed, kicking and so on. How things have changed from back in the day!

Due to the immense popularity of baseball in the United States, it is hardly surprising that many high school students are fans of famous baseball players. Many high school students are talented players, and thus college baseball recruiting focuses a lot on high school baseball athletes.

Baseball is a game comprised of two teams with nine players each. The team that wins is the one that makes the most runs. In a run, a baseball athlete hits a ball thrown by another player, and runs past four markers called bases, which are arranged at the corners of a ninety-foot square, or diamond. The players on one team take turns hitting (making them the batting team) while the other team tries to stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways (thus making them the fielding team). The two teams take turns in batting and fielding, and the team that makes the most runs is declared the winner.

The creative and persevering high school athlete recruits can get a huge advantage over the competition in college baseball recruiting. Students who start early and make the initiating move promote their cause and assist the coaches in recruiting sports athletes. With only a few exceptions, coaches cannot recruit athletes until after the student finishes his junior year in high school. A student athlete, however, can contact a coach almost anytime he wishes to.

It is hardly surprising that many high school students are fans of famous baseball players. Many high school students are talented players, and thus college student recruiting focuses a lot on high school baseball athletes.  College baseball recruiting often focuses on finding new talent amongst young people to play in Major League Baseball, which is the highest level of professional baseball in America. Teams in the MLB are divided into the National League (NL) and American League (AL). Both leagues in turn are comprised of three divisions, which are East, West, and Central. The winning team of Major League Baseball is determined by playoffs, which conclude in the annual competition known as the World Series. Four teams from each league participate in the World Series. Three of these are the regular season division winners, with the addition of one wild card team. The wild card team is the squad that possesses the best record among the non–division groups in the league.

Many high school students are hoping to get noticed in college student recruiting in order to play in college baseball teams. Fortunately, the Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both athletes in high school and athletic recruiters looking for new talent. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. D1Athletes is an online community wherein student athletes and coaches recruiting sports athletes alike can share and exchange information they need. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure. To learn more, visit D1Athletes.com.

Many people today still do not know where baseball originates from, so lets take a brief look at baseball’s history.

Although it is difficult to pinpoint an exact birthday birth place for baseball, we can trace it back to the most logical of places…England.

Games involving a bat, a ball and bases have been around for many hundreds of years, in many parts of the world. It is this reason that brings uncertainty to baseball’s one true origin.

The modern game of baseball is in fact a direct sibling of the English game of rounders. Rounders has been played in England for hundreds of years, and it is thought that the English brought the game over to the United States, where it later evolved into the sport we now know as baseball.

There are many similarities between the two sports, the most obvious being that both sports have the same basic structure. Both involve having manned bases, with the object of the game to throw the ball, hit the ball and then run in order to score points.

Since it was brought over to the United States, the game known as rounders in England was known as Town Ball in the United States. It wasn’t until Alexander Cartwright came along and recreated the sport of Town Ball, giving birth to the game of Base Ball.

Base Ball is the first “rough” version of the sport of baseball that we now play. The rules that Alexander Cartwright drew up back in 1845 played an extremely important part in the creation of the modern sport of baseball and thus he is known as the inventor of modern baseball.

Little has changed in baseball’s history since then, except for a few rules and regulations as time progressed. What the future holds for baseball…we don’t know. But what we do know is that baseball has evolved to be one of the most beloved sports in American history…baseball’s history can’t get better than that!… The future looks bright.
