Buehrle Adds Gold Glove To Stellar 2009 Baseball Betting Lines
In Baseball Betting Lines Mark Buehrle was to make a checklist for career accomplishments, both White Sox-oriented and of the individual variety, he would be able to mark off a number of targeted goals reached and even a few he didn’t expect.
For a 30-year-old pitcher with a fastball that can only rarely be described as “fast,” Mark Buehrle had a pretty good season, huh?
Buehrle’s latest accomplishment? Being awarded his the first Gold Glove of his career at Baseball Betting Lines.
The Gold Glove caps off an insane 2009 for Buerhle. Of course, there was the July 23 perfect game, only the 16th in the history of Major League Baseball. Then there was the following game, in which Buerhle pitched no-hit baseball to the Twins before eventually yielding a hit late, stacking a nearly perfect effort on top of a legendarily perfect one.
Buehrle led all American League pitchers in Baseball Betting Lines 2009 with eight pickoffs, 55 total chances and 41 assists and tied for the AL lead by assisting with five double plays while committing just one error. Since the beginning of the 2001 season, Buehrle leads all Major League pitchers with 63 pickoffs (20 more than Andy Pettitte) and ranks third with 501 total chances and 373 assists.
Over his 10-year career with the White Sox, Buehrle has allowed just 40 stolen bases in 95 attempts. That comes out to a 42.1 percent success rate, which falls as an important statistic for a staff that has had its trouble holding on baserunners.
A trademark defensive move for Buehrle is his kick-save attempt on grounders back up the middle. He admitted that part of his defense was transferred from another sport.
“When I was a little kid, I used to play street hockey,” Buehrle said. “So, everything that comes my way, I take pride in knocking stuff down.”
Then there was Mark Buehrle Day in Illinois, which Governor Pat Quinn declared on July 31. Even in a state as traditionally corrupt as Illinois, having the Governor give you your own day is a big deal.
True, the Gold Glove is easily the least important of these accomplishments
The writers who vote for award Gold Gloves tend to vote more for offense and name recognition than they do by any sort of recognizable baseball metric; Derek Jeter won the Gold Glove for shortstop, and most baseball observers agree Jeter is well past his fielding prime.
But the Gold Glove is still an accomplishment, one Buerhle deserves well enough. So congrats, Mark, and enjoy it. Few people get the have this much fun in a lifetime. You did it in one year.
QUALITY ROAD – 2009 Amsterdam Stakes *Track Record*
Just when it appeared there wasn’t a 3-year-old in the country who could touch Rachel Alexandra, along comes Quality Road, who returned from a four-month hiatus to register a record-setting 2 1/4-length victory over Capt. Candyman Can in Monday’s $150000 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga. Quality Road, the likely favorite in this year’s Kentucky Derby before being sidelined by a foot injury, covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:13.45. His final time shattered the course record set by Topsider 30 years earlier by nearly a full second. Quality Road, who was transferred from trainer Jimmy Jerkens to Todd Pletcher’s barn by owner Edward P. Evans earlier this summer, set the record despite stumbling at the start and racing wide throughout the Grade 2 Amsterdam. www.drf.com
RACHEL ALEXANDRA – 2009 Woodward Stakes
Rachel Alexandra cemented herself as one of the best fillies of all-time in a race for the ages, as she set a suicidal pace and then was all out under Calvin Borel to hold off a bold charge from Macho Again to win the $750000 Woodward Stakes (gr. I) by a head in electrifying fashion Sept. 5 at Saratoga. Sent off at 1-5, Rachel Alexandra stayed perfect in eight starts this season and became the first female to win the prestigious Woodward in which she faced older males for the first time. Only one other 3-year-old filly had ever run in the Woodward—Summer Guest, who was third in 1972. The victory also makes the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro the first 3-year-old filly to win a grade I unrestricted route race on the dirt in New York since the system of grading races began in 1973. It almost certainly locked up Horse of the Year honors too. www.bloodhorse.com

2009 Breeders Cup Classic – Post Race
Perhaps the Horse of the Year title is not a foregone conclusion. Zenyatta gave the crowd what they waited for–and the patrons responded by cheering, clapping, and waving–as she ran her unbeaten streak to 14 with a magnificent performance in the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 7 at Santa Anita. Zenyatta looked uncomfortable for the first 200 yards and was last the first time by the stands, but she was flying down the stretch the second time and rolled by Gio Ponti to win the $5-million race. Most voters had Rachel Alexandra penciled in as Horse of the Year but Zenyattas victory over males has re-opened that argument. Zenyatta was a bit reluctant to load, but the assistant starters had no problem getting her in the gate once they locked arms behind the big daughter of Street Cry and coaxed her forward. www.bloodhorse.com
