Actions that harm fellow players or go against game rules are deemed as fouls in the game of football and can effect the football scores. In most cases, fouls are committed against players of the opposing team when the player tries to block an opponent’s way, kicks an opponent, pushes him or any otherwise harms him. It is the duty of the referee to decide whether the foul was a deliberate attempt or an accidental move during the game.

A common foul called the “handball” arises when a player deliberately touches or tries to deflect the movement of the ball with his hand or arm. Accidental touches and various other conditions are, however, excused and can only be judged practically during the course of the play by the referee. For example, if a person instinctively moves his hand to protect himself, or the ball strikes the player’s hand who may be looking elsewhere, it isn’t considered a foul.

Any player intending to commit fouls will naturally tend to hide his or her actions. Trying to assess fouls is a difficult task and the referee has the important responsibility of ensuring that the game proceeds in a just manner. Co-operation between the officials and the match referee is therefore necessary.
