Child, Youth and School Services bring back tackle football

Sep 21, 2010

By Darline Goyea (USAG Wiesbaden)

WIESBADEN, Germany – Hut one. Hut two.

Tackle football has returned to Child, Youth and School Services after a more than 10-year absence.

After several requests from the community, through Youth Sports, CYSS made it happen.

Expenses, equipment and other logistics were hurdles to bringing the sport back to the Wiesbaden community, but those challenges have been overcome.

"The families who came in from the States wanted it here," said Peter Witmer, Wiesbaden school liaison officer, who is coaching the 12-14-year-old players who call themselves the Warriors. "Parents are absolutely thrilled we have it here."

Witmer, who has coached a combination of adult and youth sports, said it’s all about the children.

"My passion has been for tackle football, where I’ve coached for nine seasons." Every two-hour practice takes advanced preparation and planning, before and after practice reviews, to help the players improve their game, he said.

The mixture of veterans and neophytes brings balance to the team. It can also improve academics, said Witmer. "If the kids really want to play, they’ll make sure their grades are up."

"Team moms" – provide much needed volunteer support.

Sandra Salvo said she enjoys her position as team mom – helping by sending emails of schedule changes, organizing team photos, snack schedules and bus duty. Salvo also shows support for her 13-year-old son, Sam, who plays offense and defense. "The kids really love it," said Salvo. Tomekia Williams, a team mom whose 13-year-old son, Daniel, plays nose tackle and left guard, also volunteers as team mom for her youngest son, David, who plays on the bantam team for 9-11-year-olds. "Life is busy, but we make the sacrifices so our kids can have normalcy like in the States," she said.

Mannheim, Baumholder, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, to name a few, are surrounding communities with youth sports tackle football teams which make up the league. Each garrison will host a game for a total of seven games. The Warriors opened their season in Mannheim Sept. 11 with a 12-0 loss to a team from Kaiserslautern.

East and West leading teams play for the season championship in Bamberg on Nov. 13.

Football Picks Services Compared For You

If you enjoy the thrill of betting on football games against the number, then you are likely always looking for any advantage you can get. You enjoy seeking out insider information, getting early tips about an injury, or simply feeling like you have a better feel for the games than others.

One way you care really get an advantage is by using the experts who do have that inside information as well as the knowledge of a professional football game handicapper. There are many services out there that claim to be able to help you. To choose the right one, though, you must have football picks services compared for you. Then you can select the one that will give you that edge you are so desperately seeking when it comes to football betting.

One to consider when you have football picks services compared is Doc Sports This handicapping services has actually been in business for over 30 years. They have had great success, but do not make any outrageous claims on what they do. They win some and lose some, but win more often than not. The company is honest and affordable. So if you want to look at a football handicapping service that will pick quality games for you in an honest manner, Doc Sports is worth a look.

While Doc Sports is available both online and off, one website that offers good service in pro football is http://FootballLOCKS.com. This company approaches NFL handicapping a different way than many others. They use what they call backwards odds handicapping. This means that they work with a question as to why the line was set where it was. Once they have that knowledge, it is easier to figure out which lines might be a bit off. It is unconventional, but has been effective for them.

Another well known and effective place to think about with football picks services compared is Coaches Corner Sports. This offshore company will offer football picks as well as a wealth of information about key games. Their prices are good and they even allow you to easily place bets through their site. Additionally, the offer a number of other sports picks as well.

If you are strictly into football, then you can’t really have football picks services compared without http://football-picks-online.com. This company offers NFL season picks from the preseason through the super bowl. They have a solid record in the past and have a very easy to use service. You can have picks emailed to you and you can get information on the website directly as well. The choice is yours.

By having football picks services compared for you, you can decide which company will offer you what you need when it comes to finding that advantage. If you want that edge and a little help from the pros, then consider some of these handicapping and picks services to give you a helping hand. After all, who knows better than the professionals? Nobody, and that is why you will have the edge.

********************

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that, until last night, I had never been to a professional football game in my life. Baseball, basketball, and tennis: yes, of course. High-school and college football games: sure, though that was a long time ago. Indeed, the last college football game I watched (in person) was in the mid-60s, when I was invited to the annual Harvard-Yale game by a Radcliffe student I had begun dating — a development to which my MIT college roommate reacted, in shock, by howling, "Radcliffe? You’re dating a Cliffie? She must be a pig!" After which he pulled out his flute, every time he thought she might be present when he returned to our off-campus apartment, and played "Old McDonald Had a Farm" until he collapsed in gales of laughter on the stairwell. Highly inaccurate, I hasten to note, and totally unfair. But I digress…

Anyway, a freelance writer, Mitch Ligon (whose photo you can see here in one of my Flickr sets), invited me to accompany him last night to the New York Jets – Philadelphia Eagles game out in the New Jersey Meadowlands — another first-time experience. I was given a photographer’s press pass, which gave me access to the locker rooms, press box, various other "inner sanctum" locations … and, most important, the football field itself. I was given a red jersey to wear, told to stay outside the yellow dashed lines that ring the field, and turned loose for the evening. I felt somewhat inadequate, because I knew that the "real" professional photographers would be equipped with high-cameras and monstrous telephoto lenses beyond anything I had ever touched, or could possibly afford; and even though my Nikon D300 and 70-300mm zoom lens is fairly respectable in amateur circles, I had no idea if I would be able to take any decent photos at all…

The other problem is that I know little or nothing about the nuances of football, beyond the obvious fact that the quarterback either passes the ball, or hands off to someone who attempts to run the ball downfield. Punts and field-goal kicks are also a familiar concept, but if you don’t have a good anticipatory sense of who is about to do what to whom, it’s easy to miss the "moment" when the perfect shot might be available. Also, I didn’t really know anything about the players, aside from the respective star quarterbacks: Philadelphia’s controversial Michael Vick, and New York’s newly-named starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez. I had looked at the team rosters on the Internet before the game, so at least I knew their jersey numbers (#6 for Sanchez, and #7 for Vick, as you’ll see in the photos) — but the "action" was often so far away (at the other end of the field) that I couldn’t tell whether the starting quarterback, or one of the substitutes, was making the plays.

Nevertheless, by the beginning of the second quarter I was feeling a little more comfortable — if only because I found it easy to follow along behind the other professional photographers as they marched (or ran) from one end of the field to the other, in order to get their equipment set up for what they expected would be the next great shot. By the end of the game, I had taken 1,100+ photos, including several of Michael Vick in a post-game locker-room interview; and from the sound of the clickety-click-clack of my fellow photographers, I could tell that many of them had taken several thousand. I’ll spare you the technical details of my feeble attempts to get some decent shots; I had picked up some good tips from the sports-photography chapter of Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography, and I did my best within the limitations of my equipment and my lack of familiarity with the situation.

What impressed me most about the whole experience was the scale of modern professional football — the scale of everything. It’s one thing to read that there are 80,000 people in a football stadium; it’s another thing to actually be there and hear the simultaneous roar of those 80,000 people as a quarterback is sacked or a long pass is completed. It’s one thing to read that a professional football player is 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 350 pounds; it’s another thing to stand next to several dozen such giants. Heck, I thought there were only 20 or 30 such giants on each team; I had no idea that there were 64 of them (a number which will be pared down as the pre-season comes to an end), or that there might be 20-30 different coaches. And then there are the hundreds of "staff members" scurrying around all over the place, carrying out their various duties and assignments; and there are the security guards and State Police, who spent most of the time scanning the stadium crowd rather than watching the players, presumably watching for scuffles or fights or … well, who knows what. There are cheerleaders too, in this case bearing the official name of New York Jets Flight Crew; I had expected half a dozen, but there were two dozen perky, long-haired beauties, with permanently frozen smiles, who who danced and pranced before the crowd at every conceivable opportunity.

All of this has resulted in the photos you’ll see in this album. I had to delete roughly a hundred of my original images, because they were out of focus, or because a referee decided to walk in front of my camera at the wrong moment; and another 900 were "okay," but not terribly exciting. I’m sure that none of them are as crisp, sharp, and well-composed as those taken by the Sports Illustrated photographer and the other professionals on the field; but I did end up with 72 "keepers" that I hope you’ll enjoy…

… and, yes, I probably will attend another football game or two in the years ahead. Whether I’m lucky enough to get down on the field again is anyone’s guess….

NFL at a glance

The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of professional football in the United States. It was formed by eleven teams in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, with the league changing its name to the National Football League in 1922. The league currently consists of thirty-two teams from the United States. The league is divided evenly into two conferences — the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC), and each conference has four divisions that have four teams each, making each conference have 16 teams. The NFL is organized as an unincorporated association of its 32 teams. The NFL is by far the most attended domestic sports league in the world by average attendance per game, with 67,509 fans per game in the latest regular season (2009).

The regular season is a seventeen-week schedule during which each team plays sixteen games and has one bye week. The season currently starts on the Thursday night in the first full week of September (the Thursday after Labor Day) and runs weekly to late December or early January. At the end of each regular season, six teams from each conference play in the NFL playoffs, a twelve-team single-elimination tournament that culminates with the championship game, known as the Super Bowl. This game is held at a pre-selected site which is usually a city that hosts an NFL team.

Changes in Youth Baseball

I have seen significant changes how youth baseball has been ‘taught’ in the U.S. since the 1960′s, and the changes haven’t been positive. I didn’t say coached because coaching refers to strategy and competition, and the concentration of youth baseball must be on skill development, rules understanding, and team play. We need teaching coaches for that, because today’s players show deficiencies in these areas more than previous generations. When people of my era started playing baseball, it was the most popular sport in America and engrained in our culture. There were many different forms that helped improve individual skills; fast pitch, whiffle ball, ledge, penner, or just throwing popups to yourself, and we didn’t need parents to organize these activities. We called our friends who would call their friends, we threw off walls or our house steps, and we had games with whoever was around and made up our own rules. We became better players by thinking or playing baseball . every dayPluswe learned the game by watching baseball on televisionor going to major league games if we were lucky enough to get tickets. Most youth American players today lack the knowledge and experience that we had because they have more options to take up their free time and they therefore have varied interests. By not spending more time practicing, playing, or watching baseball, they are lagging behind kids from other countries in skill development and general baseball knowledge. Why do Latin American players dominate professionalbaseball?  In most cases playing baseball is the only sport available to kids there to participate in, and by playing constantly they progress quickly.

Can we and should we go back in time to help our youth rediscover the magic of baseball? How can we, as teachers and coaches, make the game relevant and necessary for players who get distracted and sidetracked easily.  We have to show kids what made us love baseball, and pass along that love. That’s the challenge we want to take on. In future articles we will discuss how to effectively teach and coach our youth athletes to maximize their talents while identifying the negative methods to avoid that I’ve seen too much of in the past 30 years.

Baseball is a superb sport played in the United states and has great numbers of fan following to it. There are so many major and minor league matches played between the teams, which magnetize a pretty good number of people in the stadium. If you’re also a fan of this sport and love watching the match from the stadium, you must certainly go and Buy Baseball Tickets to have enormous fun out there. There’s a huge difference between watching a game on a TV set and watching the game live from the ground. You will be excited to experience the noise of the stadium when the home team is successful. This feeling of a ground spectator is just incomparable to that of a small screen viewer.

However, there are numerous reasons, for which most people are unable to Buy Baseball Tickets. Among the list of major causes is the price issue. Generally, the cost of these major league games are on higher side and not many can afford it. As a result of which, there are many baseball lovers who can’t catch the live action of their favorite teams from the park. Again, if you’re passionate about the game and can do anything to purchase the tickets, you should try to Buy Baseball Tickets online. There are many web sites, which offer the match tickets at a discounted price for the baseball lovers. As a matter of fact, there is very limited number of tickets at these web sites. Hence, you must try to be first one to get those tickets.

If you’re trying to find even cheaper tickets, you can Buy Baseball Tickets from the ground itself. There are several street guys who are selling tickets at a negotiable price. If legal, you should definitely buy tickets from them, as they give you the choice of negotiating. As a matter of fact, in case you ask them for the tickets just before the start of the match, you can get the tickets at a preferred price. This is just because the street guy will be happy with whatever it gets in the end time. In this way, you can arrange the cheapest tickets for your baseball match.

If you find that there are so many tickets available, you must try to Buy Baseball Tickets, which will give you the best view from the entire ground. If you buy the tickets by spending a great amount and you’re unable to view the match properly, then what’s the use? Thus, you must look for the best spot for your ticket.

Horse Racing Handicapping Tip Number 2 for Horses First or Second Off the Claim

Race Horse
Horse Racing

Claiming races are the bread and butter races for many trainers and owners in horse racing.  Handicapping claiming races can be very profitable if you are looking for good priced winners and profitable bets.  Just as many trainers and owners make a living off claiming races, so do many professional handicappers.  There are several reasons for this.

One reason that the pros can make money betting on claiming races is because there are some predictable outcomes based on past experience.  For instance, knowing that a trainer is good at claiming then winning with a horse in its first race for that barn can produce some good bets.  That doesn’t mean that you should just automatically bet a horse when it runs its first race for that conditioner, though.  Making money betting on horses, and claiming races in particular, isn’t that easy.

The people who follow claiming races keep good notes on horses.  They look at the horses in the saddling ring before each claiming race and note the horse’s appearance.  They also note whether the horse is running with a tongue tie.  That is one bit of information tracks don’t supply, but that simple piece of equipment can make a big difference in a horse’s performance.

How important can note taking be?  Let’s say you decide to follow claiming races at your local track and you have notes on a horse that ran two weeks ago, was claimed from that race and is starting for a new trainer, that is what a real pro would do and there is nothing to stop you from doing the same thing.

So you go and look the horse over in the saddling ring and you compare its appearance to your notes.  You may find that the horse looks better, perhaps its coat is shinier and it appears on the muscle, prancing on its “toes,” so to speak.  If you know that trainer is capable of winning first out, and his or her go to jockey is in the irons, you may have found a good bet.  Any equipment changes may also help, including the tongue tie that the crowd will not be aware of.

On the other hand, the horse may not appear any different or perhaps, it looks even worse.  Now you know that this is one horse to pass by, even if this particular trainer is  known for winning first or second time out.  He or she obviously failed to get the animal to respond to whatever methods he or she usually uses to turn a horse around.

The nice part of this situation for you is that the crowd will only look at the notes of the public handicapper or their program and see that the trainer has a high success rate with first time claims.  They will drive the price down on the horse and you can then find a nice overlay in the pools.  That is how a serious horse player can make money off claiming races if he or she is willing to do the work.  While horseracing handicapping isn’t easy, if you do the work and keep good notes, you may eke out a profit from your bets, but you will have to work for it.
