I took this with a Super Ikomat A late in the football season during 1941. Searching faces in the large size I don’t recognize anyone. I find it interesting to see what spectators wore at games in that era.

Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities a Priority For MLB
In 1975, nearly one out of every four major league players was African American. From the 1950s to the 1970s, baseball tended to be the first choice for the best Black athletes. Baseball careers were longer and salaries were higher than those in other sports.
That began to change by the end of the 1970s. The NFL had surpassed baseball in popularity, and the Larry Bird/Magic Johnson NCAA final in 1979 led to an explosion of popularity and financial strength for the NBA and for basketball in general. The game of Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays and Henry Aaron was seen by many inner-city youths as slow, boring and the game of their parent’s generation. Some wondered if reviving baseball in inner-cities was even possible.
By the late 1970s, the dwindling number of African Americans playing baseball was noticed by officials, as was the crowds that were often composed of entirely Whites at major and minor league games. Something was needed to kick start the so-called National Pastime in urban areas. That something turned out to be a program called Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities (RBI).
John Young, a former Major League Baseball player and scout, developed the concept of Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities to provide disadvantaged youth an opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of baseball. Young grew up in South Central Los Angeles at a time when the area developed many professional baseball players. However, by the late 1970s, Young-who was working as a Major League scout-noted a significant decrease in the number of skilled athletes emerging from his childhood area.
After visiting inner-city schools and talking to members of the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, Young discovered that the majority of kids quit playing baseball between the ages of 13 and 16. The drop off was due to many factors, including a lack of organization, funding, and community support for youth baseball, as well as an overall deterioration of the social climate in many underserved areas. More often than not, kids quit after becoming discouraged by poorly organized baseball programs and enticed by the existence of other activities, including street gangs.
Since 1989, Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities has grown from a local program for boys in South Central Los Angeles to an international campaign encompassing more than 200 cities and as many as 120,000 male and female participants a year. Perhaps not coincidentally, Major League Baseball saw its first increase in Black players in 2008, to 10.2 percent from a low of 8.7 percent the year before. The final numbers for 2009 have not been released, but it is believed that African American representation in the Major Leagues will increase again.
Young intended to keep the Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities program local for five years before launching it nationally. However, due to the success of the program in Los Angeles, the Mathews-Dickey Boys Club in St. Louis adopted RBI in 1990, and Kansas City and New York City followed with the formation of RBI programs in 1992. In 1993, RBI programs were established in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Miami and Philadelphia, while youth baseball programs in Atlanta, Richmond and San Juan also became affiliated with the program. In 1994, RBI expanded to 28 cities and introduced softball leagues. To date, more than 200 leagues in 203 cities worldwide support the program.
Major League Baseball, which has administered the Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities Program since 1991, serves as the central administrative office for RBI and from 1993 to 1996, along with Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), provided start-up grants for programs demonstrating financial need. Since the inception of the program, Major League Baseball and its clubs have designated more than million worth of resources to the RBI program.
”The RBI program has many benefits,” said former New York Yankee and ESPN broadcaster Roberto Clemente, Jr., who founded the Pittsburgh RBI program and is involved with the San Juan program. “It keeps kids out of trouble and off the streets, while at the same time teaching them to stay in school. They earn self-esteem and self-respect. The educational components help them realize their potential and work toward receiving college scholarships based not only on athletics, but academics.”
RBI alumni currently playing in the Major Leagues include Carl Crawford (Tampa Bay Rays), Jimmy Rollins (Philadelphia Phillies), Coco Crisp (Kansas City Royals), and Dontrelle Willis (Detroit Tigers).
Meanwhile, Young – the “father of RBI”- continues to be amazed by the success his program has achieved in reviving baseball in inner-cities. “It’s like a child to me,” he said. “To see the magnitude of RBI – what it has grown into – is unbelievable. It’s like a dream come true.”

Good morning, today will be part 1 of my recommendation for fantasy baseball sleepers. I’m going to be talking about my special picks for 2010 fantasy baseball sleepers that are pitchers. The key way that I work out what a fantasy sleeper is, is by taking a look at their BAA which is Batting Average Against. First may I explain why I believe BAA is a vital statistic took watch when you’re hunting for Fantasy Baseball Sleepers. When a pitcher has a low BAA this implies that it is extraordinarily hard for batters to get hits off them. Now, this statistic doesn’t take into account the walks or pasted balls and stuff like that. This is the exact reason why the little quantity of pitchers with a low Batting Average Against have not been talked about in the top fantasy baseball rankings anywhere.
This brings me to what I will say is one of my specializations, that is, finding fantasy baseball sleepers which I decide using this technique of taking a look at the BAA. One of my top sleeper pitchers is Clayton Kershaw. Clayton had a Batting Average Against of .200 in 2009. If you’re pronouncing O.K what does that suggest, let us compare this number to the no 1 ranked fantasy pitcher in baseball for 2010, Tim Lincecum, he had a BAA of .206 last year. So this proves batters had a much tougher time hitting pitches thrown from Kershaw then from Lincecum. The problem here is that Kershaw does have a high tendency to give away free bases lots of batters. If he will be able to cut back on the quantity of free passes he gives up during his season I think he has got an excellent chance to evolve into one of the top-notch pitchers in baseball, thus one of my top fantasy baseball sleepers for this up coming 2010 baseball season.
This concludes the first part of my fantasy baseball sleepers on the pitching side. Tomorrow I’ll be talking about the offensive side of baseball. Like what’s all of the hype about Carlos Gonzalez? Why is he on all of the top sleeper boards across the web and plastered all over the fantasy baseball magazines? I’m going to explain some of my reasons why I believe Gonzalez is exploding into the fantasy baseball sleepers scene. You could be shocked by a number of things I need to say about him and some of the other top sleepers that are being discussed this early in the 2010 fantasy baseball season!

Every horse racing enthusiast must know the different type of races, their requirements, and their implications on the horses that compete in them. Surprised that there are more than just one type of horse race? Then read on.
Every time horse racing becomes the topic of conversation, people usually think of only one thing, and that is the thoroughbred. But contrary to the misconception, there other types of horse racing such as harness racing and steeple chase. It just so happens that the thoroughbred is the most popular! In fact, the Kentucky Derby is known as the most exciting two minutes in the world of Sports.
The Famous Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby is only part of a three-part grand slam horse racing: The Triple Crown. Imagine the excitement offered by the entire race. It’s triple the fun and adrenaline! The Kentucky Derby plus the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes complete the renowned Triple Crown prize. To this day, there are only 11 known horses to have achieved such a prestigious prize.
For the record, the highest level of competition for horse racing are the stake races. This type of race is reserved for the best horses, and even then, there is a required registration for each horse. The money collected is added to the prize money. When a Stake race is a Graded race, there is a certain appeal of class to it.
Other Types of Horse Races and their Criteria
Horses have to meet criteria before they can be allowed to race. A race may require additional weight requirements for better horses. This type of race is called a handicap race. The added weight is dependent upon past performances of the horses.
Other races sometimes require that horse must be a “non winner of three”. This is called an allowance race. Horses entered in this type of race is usually chosen to be prepped for better races. Most of the time these horses go on to compete in handicap and stake races.
Another type of race, and probably the most common, is the claiming race. A claiming race may also be “optional.” Before the race, owners are asked to specify an amount by which the thoroughbred may be claimed or purchased for.
You can rest assured that the racing field is leveled by this requirement. Obviously, owners will not list better horses in a claiming race. This type of race may be a good place to expose or train your weaker horses. Who knows? They might just need a little training to turn into a champion. Just make sure you are ready to part with your horse.
If you don’t want to part with your horses and you want to list them in a race to see just how they perform or to familiarize them with competitive races, a maiden race is the best avenue for this. This type of race is confined for horses with no record of wins. The winner of the race is said to have “broken his maidenhood.”
When to Watch Which Race
Race tracks usually hold eight or more races each day, combining all of the above-mentioned races. It doesn’t matter which type or race you watch and whether you win or not. In the end, you’ll still experience the fervent excitement that keeps horse racing enthusiasts coming back for seconds.

Hockey Equipment for ice and inline hockey are two very different things. Why are they so different in nature you ask? Well, for one, one sport uses wheels. The other sport uses a sharp metal blade. You might find some similar things in both hockey equipment, but you should know what makes each of them.
Like I said, the blade is used for ice hockey. The blade on an ice hockey skate, helps dig into the ice and then glide along it. So the hockey player has both speed an control. They can also stop by tearing into the ice with their feet. This usually sends up particles of ice and a cool wooshing affect. It’s also commonly known as the hockey stop.
Can you hockey stop on roller blades. Let’s say for example you have a pair of inline Reebok Hockey skates. Can you stop? Will you need a special pair of roller hockey skates? Will you need RBK11′s or another special skate. No, it’s all in the wheels. It’s probably easier to do a hockey stop on inline hockey skates with a pair of super hard outdoors wheels. The reasoning for this is that it most likely will slide along the surface. Soft roller hockey wheels tend to grip the surface and will cause you problems. Just remember skating on the hard wheels you might not get a chance to hockey stop if you keep sliding while trying to skate. Remember, it’s all about the surface and the wheels.
Which is faster? I would say that ice hockey skates are definitely faster, but inline hockey wheels are catching up. The better the wheel and bearing technology is, the faster hockey players can skate. There some pretty fast bearings out there.
If there is one similarity that I have to mention, it has to be that both ice hockey and roller hockey skates need to be maintenanced. You havet to sharpen the ice hockey blades and you have to lubricate your bearings if you want to have fast skates in both sports. Hockey equipment is a simple thing to understand.
