College Soccer: a Short History

Students try out in college sports recruiting for a spot in college soccer teams. Soccer is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world. It is played on a rectangular field of grass or turf, with a goal set up at the opposite ends. The object of the game is to bring the ball into the opposing goal. Generally, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to catch the ball, while the rest of the team usually make use their feet to kick the ball in play, or else use their torso or head to propel a ball in midair. The team that manages to score the most goals by the end of the allotted time wins. Depending on the format of the game, if the score is tied at the end of the game, a draw is acknowledged, or else the game proceeds into overtime and/or a penalty shootout.

In England during medieval times, players from towns and villages played against rival towns and villages. Apparently there were no known set of definitive rules, and kicking, punching, biting and such violent behavior were permitted.

The object of the game was to move the ball to an agreed spot which had been marked out before playing commenced. Hundreds of people took part in the games, and a match could last all day. So violent did these matches become that many attempts were made by the authorities to ban soccer. In fact, during King Edward III’s reign, laws were passed that threatened imprisonment to anyone caught playing soccer. King Edward III’s included this statement: “For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future.”

Soccer is now a regulated sport with countless fans across the world; and many among these are high school students. It is usually the case that only the indisputably best players will be approached with offers to play in college soccer teams without having to make any effort. Most soccer players will have to promote their skills and abilities themselves in the process of college sports recruiting.

Fortunately, the Internet has proved to be a useful venue for both athletes and coaches looking for promising players to play in their college soccer teams. What I Know and Remember About Baseball – Tee for One

The practice Tee. Golfers have no problem digging out dollars for buckets of rancid, scared and otherwise abused golf balls to place on a plastic Tee so they can hit away. Adults find immense pleasure watching their little ones adorn themselves in baseball uniforms and helmets to play T ball. So why is it that when baseball players reach a certain age that they (and some coaches) talk down the process of T work?

Lets look at the downside of the hitting a baseball off a Tee. The baseball player’s purpose for T work is to 1- locate the sweet spot of their bat. 2- develop muscle memory for a level swing at various point in the strike zone. 3- more muscle memory for the stride that works best for them. 4- be able to break down the movements of the swing to make adjustments where needed 5- allow time to practice each portion of the swing before bringing it all together 6- confidence gained through familiarity of actually hitting the baseball. 7- ball flight gives you immediate confirmation of the baseball being well hit or miss hit.

Ooops, those are all good things.

Ok, the downside of hitting a baseball off a Tee. 1- your friends tease you (but your batting average is double theirs) 2- your coach equates Tee work to T Ball (you likely need a new coach) 3- you pocket half the money you would spend on batting cages ( may be able to afford an even better grade of glove then you had been hoping for) 4- Tee work can be done for hours on end (batting cage time is over went the money is gone). 5- you can’t give yourself a black eye or take one in the gut working off a Tee

There I’ve done it again. Well, it seems I am just not the guy to talk down Tee work. Many people try to compare Tee work with batting practice. They really are separate activities. Baseball batting practice is the action of putting it all together and hitting the ball. Batting practice can be “live” as with soft toss, practice pitch or batting cages. Each has their own special place in making anyone a better hitter. But all these methods provide variation in the delivery. Pitching machines put it in a similar place more often, but there is still variation on every delivery. By diligent Tee work, you train yourself for all the basics and learn what works for you in various delivery conditions.

It’s the repetition of Tee work that makes it so valuable. The more you swing and get positive reinforcement (actually hitting the ball) the better your whole program becomes. Batting cages have their place, but how many times have you, or even seen someone else, hit every pitch and drive it straight back at the machine? I’ve never done it myself and I have only seen two others hit every pitch and drive them relatively well.

Repetition is essential in any physical activity. From writing your name with a pencil, to drinking water from a glass. The more repetitions’ you do, the quicker you will master the activity. Have you ever seen a really good rough carpenter set and slam a sinker. They don’t even look. If you watch closely, they take a nail from the nail bag by feel, place it in the spot they want, one tap then slam! Its in. It looks easy and effortless. After 10 or 15 thousand nails, it actually is. Now the first 500 or so, that’s a different story. Making a mess of the nail head and the board its going into along with taking 6 or so strikes then straightening out a few along way is more the norm.

So there you have it. Working off a Tee is just like drinking water, writing your name or framing walls. Baseball truly is an all encompassing pastime, isn’t it.

ZENYATTA – 2009 Breeders Cup Classic + Post Race

Perhaps the Horse of the Year title is not a foregone conclusion. Zenyatta gave the crowd what they waited for–and the patrons responded by cheering, clapping, and waving–as she ran her unbeaten streak to 14 with a magnificent performance in the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 7 at Santa Anita. Zenyatta looked uncomfortable for the first 200 yards and was last the first time by the stands, but she was flying down the stretch the second time and rolled by Gio Ponti to win the $5-million race. Most voters had Rachel Alexandra penciled in as Horse of the Year but Zenyattas victory over males has re-opened that argument. Zenyatta was a bit reluctant to load, but the assistant starters had no problem getting her in the gate once they locked arms behind the big daughter of Street Cry and coaxed her forward. www.bloodhorse.com

College Soccer: Kicking Techniques and Scholarships

Students try out in college sports recruiting for a spot in college soccer teams. Soccer is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world. It is played on a rectangular field of grass or turf, with a goal set up at the opposite ends. The object of the game is to bring the ball into the opposing goal. Depending on the format of the game, if the score is tied at the end of the game, a draw is acknowledged, or else the game proceeds into overtime and/or a penalty shootout.

Soccer kicking techniques vary widely. From basic shooting and passing skills to advanced techniques (such as bending the ball around a wall, for instance), soccer players have a number of kicking styles to choose from and utilize.

The player’s instep, which is the part of the foot where the laces are, provides both power and control to a kick. One of the most common mistakes made by novice players is to use the toe. This not only painful, but makes for terribly inaccurate shots as well. The instep presents a flat surface to the ball, allowing more control. It can also be used to make the ball swerve and dip.

The non-kicking foot in turn provides support, and should be bent when a kick is made. When keeping the ball on the ground, a player’s head should be kept down, over the ball. The kick itself be long and smooth, and should be made slightly from the side whenever possible.

This basic soccer kicking technique is remarkably simple, and therefore is often overlooked. Real skill is found in making accurate kicks while under pressure in a tight game, and it is far more important than to being able to perform fancy tricks with the ball.

How to Play Soccer – Soccer Formations

To the uninitiated, soccer formations might sound complicated. But with the help of a few practical examples, you can learn about the 4-4-2 formation right up to the more obscure ones at the other end of the scale.

A soccer formation is the way that the coach arranges his eleven players on the field. Generally these rotate around the four cardinal soccer positions for football formations: goalkeeper, defense, midfield, and attack. The formations given in numbers are simply the number of defenders, midfielders, and attackers in the line-up. (There’s no need to provide the 1 at the start for a goalkeeper as it’s pretty much a given that every team needs one goalie!)

Formations make a difference as they can cancel out what the opposition coach has planned, as well as serve the strengths of your own soccer team. For example, if you have three great forwards, you might try a 4-3-3, or if you have some very fast, fit, small players, you can attack up the wings in a 4-4-2.

With that in mind, we’ll take a look at some of the popular soccer formations below.

4-4-2: Every aspiring soccer coach has the 442 as his trusty standby. This classic formation grew popular in the mid-to-late 20th century and features four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards. Within this there is variance, but generally the players who are in the middle are more defensive while the creativity comes from out wide. Tall, commanding centre-backs can pass the ball to swift full-backs, who play at either side of the defensive ‘four’, and they will in turn feed the ‘wingers’ ahead of them, while the central midfielders will play the simple passes and also tackle the opposition. Up front are two strikers whose job it is to hold the ball up and wait for support, or simply to put it in the back of the net!

4-4-2 Diamond: This 4-4-2 variant places more emphasis on central play, with a “playmaker” in the middle of the midfield four supporting the forwards. This must be a player of vision and with a great pass. The full-backs have to support the forwards, too, with bursting runs, while the remaining three midfielders have a lot of defensive work to do.

3-5-2: The 3-5-2 works similarly up front to the other two, but other than that it varies due to a change on the wings – the wide part of the field. The five-man midfield generally contains two “wing-backs”, who combine the role of the full back with that of an attacker. These players must be very fit as they’ll be running up and down those lines for a full 90 minutes! As soccer lineups go the 3-5-2 is becoming unfashionable, but with the right wide players available, not to mention a tough-tackling defensive midfielder in the middle of the five, it can work very well.

4-5-1: A very ‘negative’, defensive formation, the 4-5-1 ironically gives a great deal of work to the lone attacker up front. This striker may have to do a lot of dribbling, holding up the ball, and passing backwards to gain the support of his midfield. Still, with wingers, it can be a fine formation with which to practice the ‘counter-attack’ (breaking forward to score while the opposition are

Baseball – Fans Link to Zen is More Than Fantasy

Baseball as therapy from the daily grind or life’s challenges. As a pastime baseball has mountains of statistics to ponder, miles of ‘what if’ scenarios and the warm glow of summer all year long. What better escape is there to use?

Each and every opinion on Baseball could be the right one. From the subtle details of how to hit a ball to comparisons of old time natural players vs modern technically analyized players. Each of us can be right at any given moment. Even when we are wrong, its obvious to find the little tid-bit that was left out of the equation.

Fantasy baseball is a prime example of how we can take seemingly miniscule data and develope an entire industry around a former farmers pastime.

Therapy indeed. A direct distraction from the doldrums of what occupies your time to pay your bills. Designing buildings, building the buildings, or working in the buildings. Drift away from the tugs of daily life. In other parts of the world people sit and ponder emptiness, this is called meditation. Sitting quietly, blocking out the distractions of the world and focusing on the self.

Or follow the path of the true fans from colorful places like Boston and New York and go find someone to get into a heated, vein popping, eye bulging, spit flailing ‘discussion’ on the finer points of the game, player or moment in history.

As westerner’s bombarded with images, data, noise and more noise from the moment we wake up till sleep finally falls upon us; emptiness is hard to grasp. But the focus of meditation is not confined to the self and emptiness. The simple effort of focusing on something other than what life presents to us thru out the day is just as beneficial.
Baseball has all the right stuff to meditate about. Warm days, green grass, sun filled skys the calm of lackluster play and the rush of a great play, well hit ball or the tension of bases loaded with no outs. Baseball memories tend to improve over time with thoughts bringing up those feelings of well being.

The northern states have the fall and winter seasons where all there is to baseball are the memories and the statistics. Last year, Washington State recorded some 90+ straight days of rain. Biologically, we need sunlight to create vitamin D. Baseball with its fullness of detail is almost a necessity for those deprived of sunlight and constant exposure to dreary weather.

So there you have it, Baseball as Western Zen. Relief and release to be called upon at will.
